This biography of Admiral Lord Collingwood; fearless warrior, beloved commander, artful statesman and diplomat, and the least-known and most unfairly un-sung hero of Britain's wars against Napoleon, is based in part on hundreds of Collingwood's letters, his midshipman's logs, and his secret letter books (in which the author has recently uncovered the first draft of the Admiral's famous despatch after the battle of Trafalgar), all of which give a vivid insight into the man who was Nelson's hero and co-combatant (they are buried together in St Paul`s), who fought in the American War of Independence, the Glorious 1st of June, the Battle of St Vincent, whose role at Trafalgar was crucial to victory, and who from 1805 until his death was virtual viceroy of the Mediterranean. |
