Historian Max Adams was born in London in 1961. He began a career as an archaeologist at 14, before going on to read for a degree in Archaeology at the University of York. He has since excavated and travelled widely, and was director of the infamous Spitalfields Crypt excavation. His archaeological work has been published widely in academic journals. Max directed the Durham University Archaeology Unit in the 1990s, before retiring to become a woodsman and part-time lecturer and television presenter. He has also at various times made a living as a builder, a computer nerd, a model and a musician.

Max won a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowship in 2003, which enabled him to travel the world in the wake of Admiral Lord Collingwood, who will be the subject of his first book, ADMIRAL COLLINGWOOD: NELSON'S OWN HERO, to be published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson in the UK and John Wiley in the US, in June 2005.

Max lives in Gateshead with his son Jack.

ADMIRAL COLLINGWOOD: NELSON'S OWN HERO US edition to be published by John Wiley and Sons

WEIDENFELD (16 Jun 05)

This biography of Admiral Lord Collingwood; fearless warrior, beloved commander, artful statesman and diplomat, and the least-known and most unfairly un-sung hero of Britain's wars against Napoleon, is based in part on hundreds of Collingwood's letters, his midshipman's logs, and his secret letter books (in which the author has recently uncovered the first draft of the Admiral's famous despatch after the battle of Trafalgar), all of which give a vivid insight into the man who was Nelson's hero and co-combatant (they are buried together in St Paul`s), who fought in the American War of Independence, the Glorious 1st of June, the Battle of St Vincent, whose role at Trafalgar was crucial to victory, and who from 1805 until his death was virtual viceroy of the Mediterranean.
