Nancy Mitford was born in 1904. She grew up in a large remote country house with five sisters and one brother. She was, she said, uneducated except for being taught to ride and to speak French. She lived in Paris and she periodically contributed articles on life there to the 'Sunday Times'. Nancy Mitford wrote several novels and edited two books of Victorian letters. She also translated LA PRINCESSE DE CLEVES, and wrote four biographies, a stage adaptation and edited a collection of essays called NOBLESSE OBLIGE. She was awarded the CBE in 1972 and died in 1973.
