WAITER!

JOHN MURRAY (7 Aug 08)

Based on the incredibly popular blog www.waiterrant.net, WAITER!: AN INSIDER'S: LOOK AT THE FRONT LINES OF DINING OUT centres around life at The Bistro, an upscale restaurant in the New York Metropolitan area. With trademark wit and an old soul's insight into human behaviour, our waiter hero will do for the front of the house what Bill Buford's Heat and Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential have done for the kitchen.

Originally intended as a chance to vent his frustrations about what seemed like a dead-end job, Waiter began to see a litany of incredible stories in the lives of his customers and his colleagues. As he says "Ordering from a waiter is one of the most taken for granted human interactions in modern life. We're never more ourselves than when eating out with family and friends." And with a former Seminarian's pause and thoughtfulness he began to document them. Nearly two years later he is the author of one of the most popular blogs on the web, generating nearly 70,000 hits per day and numerous interviews and profiles from The New York Times, The Wall St. Journal, CNN, and the BBC, as well as a nominations for one of the best blogs of 2006 at the annual Bloggie awards.

The platform generated by the blog is of course an asset, with the obvious marketing and publicity benefits. But the real key to this material is the writing, which is widely hailed as some of the best on the web. It makes such a refreshing change to reading writing coming from the world of blogs that instantly and instinctively appeals as writing rather than just being internet wallpaper. Waiterrant.net is a truly enjoyable and interesting and entertaining place to spend time - not just because of the set-up, and the idea, but because of the genuine quality of the writing and the instant empathy its host engenders. Atmospheric, character-driven, and gritty with the truth wrung from a hard day's work, this proposal and the blog will leave you - as readers will come away from the book - unable to see a restaurant or your waiter in the same way again.
